Was the son of Ahlred, who reigned 765–74, and possibly nephew to Aelfwald I, 779–88. He succeeded the latter but was driven out by Aethelred I, the former king, in 790. On returning from exile, he was seized and murdered 14 September 792, and buried at Tynemouth.
