Quick Reference

If a second son of Aldfrith, cannot have been much older than eighteen when he succeeded Cenred in 718, since his elder brother, Osred, had died in 716 aged nineteen. Though Osric reigned for eleven years during Bede's lifetime, we are told little about him save that he died on 9 May 729 after naming Ceolwulf, brother of Cenred, as his successor. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle says that he was slain.
