A structured activity which takes place after school hours, during school holidays, at lunchtimes, or at break, and is not directly included in national curriculum requirements. It is usually organized and supervised by teachers, and takes the form of such activities as sports and sporting competitions, drama rehearsals and productions, chess clubs, orchestra and choir practices and performances, and homework clubs. Engagement in these activities is normally voluntary on the part of pupils and teachers alike. See also extracurricular.
