Protestant theologian. Holding that the Christian Gospel was wholly eschatological and world-negating, Overbeck came to reject historic Christianity and expounded a ‘secular Church history’, in which the course of ecclesiastical history was understood as a radical departure from the original revelation in Scripture. In his critique of immanental religious notions, he influenced modern Dialectical Theology.
