The condition in which a heterozygous organism has greater fitness than the corresponding homozygotes. The hypothesis is that the heterozygous state leads to enhanced gene expression at a particular locus or set of loci relative to either homozygous alternative; this is proposed as an explanation of hybrid vigour.
