The process of hard training that forms part of an athlete's planned training programme to stimulate physiological adaptation. When combined with adequate rest, overreaching is normal and beneficial. Signs of overreaching include high serum creatine kinase concentration, low serum testosterone to cortisol concentration, a fall in muscle glycogen, and raised heart rate and feelings of fatigue, but these return quickly to normal after rest.
