leader of the Leveller movement, was a forceful pamphleteer, much of whose work was published anonymously, some under the pseudonym of Martin Marpriest. A tract on the immortality of the soul, Man's Mortality (1643), aroused much controversy, and he was imprisoned many times for his unorthodox religious and radical political views.
