Genes whose nucleotide sequences overlap to some degree. The overlap may involve regulatory sequences (e.g., tryptophan operator and promoter regions in E. coli) or structural genes (e.g., in bacteriophage phiX174, gene E lies entirely within gene D, but they are translated in different reading frames).
