oxygen transport system

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

The body system that transports oxygen from the lungs to respiring tissue. It depends on the ability of the heart to pump blood around the body and the ability of tissues to extract oxygen from the blood. Thus, the functioning of the oxygen transport system is determined by the stroke volume, heart rate, and the arterial-venous oxygen difference. The product of these values equals the rate at which oxygen is being consumed by the body tissues. Endurance training enables the oxygen transport system to function more effectively.
