French scholar. In 1833 he founded the ‘Society of St Vincent de Paul’, an association of laymen for personal service among the poor. He became a professor at the Sorbonne, and he edited some early Franciscan poetry (1852), of importance for the history of medieval spirituality. Together with H. D. Lacordaire he founded the Ère nouvelle in 1848 as a mouthpiece for their ideas on Catholic socialism. Feast day, 8 Sept.
