Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

Ozone forms in the lower atmosphere (troposphere) when solar radiation splits nitrogen dioxide into nitrous oxide and an oxygen radical, which combines with oxygen to form ozone. This occurs mainly in urban regions with heavy motor traffic on warm summer days with intense sunlight. It is a toxic, irritant gas, a constituent of photochemical smog.
