n. a tumour-suppressor gene located on chromosome 17. p53 protein binds DNA, which stimulates genes involved in suppressing division and inducing apoptosis. Mutations of p53 result in uncontrolled division of cells and formation of tumours; they occur in breast, skin, and various other cancers.
