Paan (or pan) is the universal chewing gum of Asia. It consists of a leaf of the betel palm, wrapped around a preparation of betel nuts and lime, which is chewed for hours on end. Hindi pān, whose original meaning is ‘betel leaf’, is descended from Sanskrit parná, ‘feather, leaf’.
