(b Odessa, 1848; d Rome, 1933). Russ.-born pianist (It. cit. 1928). Début Odessa 1869, then retired for 8 years' further study; reappeared in public but then retired again for 2 years. From age of 32 became popular and successful recitalist, especially in mus. of Chopin. Début USA 1891. Eccentric platform-manner, often making remarks to the audience in praise of himself or in disparagement of other pianists, and crawling under the pf. after a recital to look for the wrong notes he had played!
