A volcanic zone that runs right around the edges of the Pacific Ocean, along a series of subduction zones of convergent plate boundaries, where the moving plates of the Pacific plunge beneath the confining plates to the east, north, and west. It extends through the Andes in South America, runs through Central America and Mexico, along the west coast of the USA into Alaska, across the Aleutian Island chain, through the Kamchatka Peninsula, through Japan and the Philippines, and into New Zealand and the margins of Antarctica.
