An epithet of Viṣṇu, derived from the Purāṇic cosmogonic myth that at the beginning of each kalpa a lotus sprouts from the navel of the sleeping god, thus inaugurating a new cycle of creation. The name is particularly associated with the image of Viṣṇu in the temple at Trivandrum in Kerala, where, during the 18th century ce, the king of Travancore abdicated in favour of the deity.
