Ballet in one act with choreography by Fokine, libretto by Rachmaninoff and Fokine, music by Rachmaninoff, and designs by Soudeikine. Premiered 30 Jun. 1939 by Colonel de Basil's Ballets Russes at Covent Garden with Dmitri Rostov, Baronova, and Riabouchinska. Set to Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, it was created as a collaboration between composer and choreographer, portraying the tormented musical genius of Paganini. The score, minus its libretto, was also used by Lavrovsky (the Bolshoi, 1962) and by Ashton (in Rhapsody, 1980).
