The earth goddess of the Incas. She received sacrifices of Ilamas and other animals. Before the first Incas entered Cuzco, their capital, they killed a llama. One of the four sisters in the party caught the animal, removed the lungs, and inflated them with wind. Carrying this bloody standard of Pachamama and the golden wedge of the sun god Inti, they entered the city. Worship of the earth goddess survives today, and she has also been identified with the Virgin Mary.
