A vicious cycle resulting from training when in pain. Initially, pain may occur only after intensive activity. Instead of taking this as a warning sign, an athlete may attempt to train through it. The pain may disappear during warm-ups, allowing the athlete to continue training, which may aggravate the injury, worsening the pain. The pain cycle continues until the athlete suffers a chronic injury, which prevents training, or until the cycle is broken by rest and treatment of the injury. Generally, the earlier the escape from the pain cycle, the less rest is required, and the easier the treatment.
