An individual's reaction to pain. The ability to continue an activity despite the perception of pain indicates a high pain tolerance. Pain tolerance varies widely and is strongly affected by genetic, psychological, and cultural influences. Training that is painful, but not damaging, may improve the ability of some athletes to tolerate pain.
