A representative of the Nereites trace fossil assemblage, associated with deep-water turbidite facies. Palaeodictyon was originally thought to be a complex grazing trace but is now thought to represent a permanent or semi-permanent burrow system. The burrows form a complex, hexagonal pattern with a single, vertical tube reaching towards the bed surface. It is probable that the organism concerned ‘farmed’ bacteria or algae within the burrows; water currents passed down the vertical tubes to irrigate the burrow system.
