Chlorenchyma tissue, comprising tightly packed, columnar cells, each containing many chloroplasts, in a leaf. In mesophytes it is found together with spongy mesophyll and is usually on the upper (adaxial) side of the leaf. In many xerophytes it is found on both sides of the leaf and often forms the bulk of the mesophyll.
