A condition in which there is abnormal keratinization of the skin of the palm of the hand and sole of the foot. Epidermolytic palmoplantar keratoderma can be caused by mutation in the keratin 9 gene which is responsible for producing intermediate filaments that insert into desmosomes in palmar and plantar epidermis. Striate keratosis palmoplantaris type 1 is due to mutations in desmoglein, type 2 to mutation in desmoplakin or mutation in the epidermal cytokeratin 1 gene.
