The oldest international health agency, established in 1902 by the Organization of American States (OAS). It dealt with problems such as malaria, yellow fever, hookworm, pellagra, and other deficiency diseases. It had a distinguished record of research on and control of yellow fever, Chagas disease, and other serious public health problems before it also took on the role of Regional Office for WHO for the Americas and has continued its work in the years since WHO was founded.
