The author of the Aṣṭādhyāyi, the near-definitive grammar which codified classical Sanskrit in under 4 000 sūtras. Nothing is known about him, although he is reputed to have been born at Śalātura near Gandhāra (straddling parts of modern Afghanistan and Pakistan).
