Quick Reference

The human P blood group system consists of three antigens: the globoside antigens P and P(k), and the oligosaccharide, or paragloboside, antigen P1. They are synthesized by the sequential addition of monosaccharides to ceramide by different glycosyltransferases. The Donath–Landsteiner antibody reacts with P antigen (see paroxysmal cold haemoglobinuria) and P antigen is the cellular receptor for parvovirus B19, which causes erythema infectiosum.
