(1918–1991), shipowner. Pao Yue-kong was born near Ningbo, China, on November 10, 1918; his Pao family had a distinguished ancestry but then lived in moderate circumstances. Thus Pao received only a basic education, but he took evening classes that enabled him to leave his father's shoe business and pursue a career in insurance and banking during World War II. This new career culminated in Pao's gaining control of Shanghai's municipal bank. Pao moved from Shanghai to Hong Kong in 1949.
