Large green or yellow melon-like fruit of the tropical tree Carica papaya, widely grown in all tropical regions. Fruit of the formosa variety weigh as much as 1.5–3 kg. The proteolytic enzyme, papain, is derived from the fruit. A 150‐g portion is a rich source of vitamin C; a good source of vitamin A (as carotene); supplies 55 kcal (230 kJ). See also babaco.
