Syn: human papilloma virus (HPV). The virus that causes warts. There are many varieties, some of which cause common warts, others cause venereal warts. Two strains, HPV16 and HPV18, are confirmed human carcinogens for carcinoma of the cervix. These are candidates for vaccines. See http://www.cie.iarc.fr/htdocs/monographs/vol64/hpv.htm.
