An antibacterial agent effective against most Gram-negative organisms. It has been used alone or camphorated (1/3 parachlorophenol, 2/3 camphor) as a topical application to disinfect root canals. Its use has declined because of its cytotoxicity and potential for damage to adjacent tissues.
