Quick Reference

Pattern of fibres within a muscle in which the fibres are roughly parallel to the longitudinal axis of the muscle. Muscles, such as the biceps brachii, with a parallel fibre arrangement are able to shorten greatly, moving body segments through large ranges of motion, but they are not as powerful as muscles with a pennate fibre arrangement (see pennate muscle). See also fusiform muscle.
