Quick Reference

A formal agreement usually between the mother and unmarried father of a child conferring parental responsibility on the father. The agreement must be made on a set form, be signed and witnessed, and be registered in the Principal Registry of the Family Division in London. Once made, the agreement cannot be revoked by either party. Only a court may bring a parental responsibility agreement to an end – on the application of either party with parental responsibility or by the child himself if he has been given permission by the court to apply.
