Quick Reference

Philip V of Spain was far from reconciled to the loss of Minorca and Gibraltar to Britain after the War of the Spanish Succession. In 1725 a Spanish‐Austrian rapprochement forced Britain, France, and the Dutch into a defensive treaty of Hanover and in February 1727 the Spaniards began a siege of Gibraltar. It was beaten off, and in May 1727 a preliminary settlement was agreed at Paris.
