(1927–1988), born Margaret Cecile Parish, an American author and educator best known for her popular easy reader series beginning with Amelia Bedelia (1963), in which puns and misunderstandings result in domestic chaos. Dinosaur Time (1974), an easy reader profiling eleven popular dinosaurs, also received positive critical and popular attention. Other Parish offerings include the four- volume board book set, I Can—Can You? (1984), celebrating the new skills of toddlers; several nonfiction craft books describing very simple projects; and the Liza, Bill, & Jed mystery series (1968–1986) for middle graders. Some controversy exists over the Granny Guntry easy reader stories, in which a nearsighted elderly woman plows through a variety of fiascos on the frontier, and Good Hunting, Blue Sky (1989), a revised edition of Good Hunting, Little Indian (1962); these books received some censure for perceived stereotyping of Native Americans.
