Quick Reference

(Greek for ‘presence’ or ‘arrival’).

In its English form the word is used particularly to denote the future return of Christ in glory (later called the ‘Second Coming’) to judge the living and the dead, and to terminate the present world order. Primitive Christianity believed this event to be imminent, and this belief has often been revived, but the prevailing Christian tradition has opposed speculation on the time and manner of the Coming.
