(b Merthyr Tydfil, 1841; d Penarth, 1903). Welsh composer. Prof. of mus., Univ. Coll., Aberystwyth 1873–9, ran private mus. sch. in Swansea 1881–8, and became lect. in mus. at Univ. Coll. of S. Wales and Monmouthshire, Cardiff, 1888–1903. Wrote 7 operas, 3 oratorios, cantatas, and hymn-tunes, incl. the superb Aberystwyth (1877), to which are usually sung the words ‘Jesu, Lover of my Soul’. Tune appeared in Ail Lyfr Tonau ac Emynau, 1879.
