King of the state of Kosala and a devoted friend and follower of the Buddha. The two were of a similar age, and Pasenadi visited the Buddha often for discussions on a range of topics. Early in his reign he sought to take a wife from the Buddha's clan in order to strengthen the bonds between their two families. However, the Śākyans deceived him and sent him a slave girl by whom he had a son, Viḍūḍabha. When Viḍūḍabha later discovered the true status of the girl he invaded the Śākyan territories and killed large numbers of them. Pasenadi's sister was married to Bimbisāra, the first king of Magadha.and Ajātaśatru was his nephew. Uncle and nephew waged war several times over the possession of a village.
