Quick Reference

A paste used in Renaissance Italy for the decoration of cheap wooden boxes, probably produced as substitutes for caskets of precious metals. The paste was made either of gesso or white lead mixed with an egg binder. After the paste had been applied to the box, moulded in relief, and allowed to harden, it was then usually painted and gilded.
