In Śaiva Siddhānta theology, a term, used individually and collectively, for the soul or ātman, expressing the idea that, short of liberation, it remains in a state of beginningless bondage to an essential impurity (mala), and to the other ties (pāśa) which constitute the material universe. Paśu may be liberated through Śiva's grace, which is accessed through dīkṣa.
