A small change to a program which usually eradicates an error. Patches are normally sent out by software companies in between launching new versions of the software. For example, when a company is notified of a security problem with some software, it sends out a patch to eradicate the problem. Reputedly the popular server Apache was given its name because of the large numbers of patches which were applied to it during its initial release period.
