(1860–1947)

Bolivian capitalist. He pioneered the development of Bolivia's tin resources and died one of the world's richest men. Although his modest origins impeded his entry into the Bolivian social élite, by the 1900s Patiño controlled over half of the tin production in Bolivia and exerted considerable influence on his country's government. He is still criticized for not investing in the development of his own country.
