(1824–1907),

missionary to Vanuatu (then known as the New Hebrides). A member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Scotland, he arrived at Aneityum in 1858; soon afterwards he moved to the island of Tanna, but in 1862 fled to the Australian colonies. From 1866 to 1881 he was a missionary in the Presbyterian Church of Victoria on the island of Aniwa, near Tanna; from 1881 he was based in Melbourne. His autobiography (1889) stimulated support for his cause.
