Literally, the father or ruler of a family or tribe. The term is most commonly used of the great forefathers of Israel, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It is also used of the ancestors of the human race before the Flood and of the twelve sons of Jacob. See also Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs.
