(b Vienna, 1887; d Salzburg, 1971). Austrian conductor, composer, and musicologist. Son of Hans Paumgartner and Rosa Papier. Cond. at Vienna Opera 1911–12, but became one of leading organizers of Salzburg Fest., often conducting there. Comp. mus. for Hofmannsthal's Jedermann, 1920. Dir. Salzburg Mozarteum 1917–38, 1945–59. Founded Salzburg Mozart Chamber Orch. Visited USA 1965. Comp. operas, ballet, and other works. Wrote books on Mozart (1927), Salzburg (1935), Schubert (1943), and J. S. Bach (1950).
