Quick Reference

An acidic serine-phosphorylated protein (phosphoprotein enriched in astrocytes, 15 kDa, 130 aa) containing a death effector domain that colocalizes with microtubules. It is highly expressed in the central nervous system, where it apparently protects against cytokine-induced apoptosis. It is phosphorylated in astrocytes by CaMKII (or a related kinase) and by protein kinase C in response to endothelin; the phosphorylation state may determine whether PEA-15 influences proliferation or apoptosis.
