(1795–1869) US philanthropist. He established a prosperous trading business in the eastern USA before settling in London in 1837. He became one of the leading international bankers of his age, amassing a vast fortune, a substantial part of which he devoted to philanthropic ends, including the first educational foundation in the USA, the Peabody Education Fund, set up in 1867 to promote education in the South. He also gave large sums for slum clearance in Britain.
