1 (Gay: The Beggar's Opera). Sop. Daughter of Mr and Mrs Peachum. She has fallen in love with the highwayman Macheath and, knowing her parents will disapprove, has married him secretly. When her father finds out, she urges her husband to hide. He is arrested and sent to gaol. Visiting him there, she meets his former wife and the two women quarrel. She and Macheath are united when he is released. Created (1728) by Lavinia Fenton (who later became the Duchess of Bolton).
