Quick Reference

Born at Eton and in business there before moving c.1767 to London, where he worked with his brother Thomas until his death. Payne produced bindings of the highest quality and craftsmanship, working for many of the famous collectors of the time, including Beckford, Cracherode, and Wodhull. He is unusually well documented, for a binder, as many of his bills survive.
