Quick Reference

A lectin from Arachis hypogaea (a homotetramer of 273 aa subunits). It binds to galactosyl (β-1,3)-N-acetylgalactosamine (T-antigen) a moiety present in M and N blood groups, gangliosides, and many other soluble and membrane-associated glycoproteins and glycolipids, although binding is usually blocked by terminal sialic acid. Used histologically in distinguishing between normal and tumour tissues and in assessing malignancy in transitional mucosa.
