(b Montijo, 20 Jan. 1940; d Lisbon, 30 June 1995). Portuguese composer. Early studies with Braga Santos were followed by work with Nono, Boulez, and Stockhausen at Darmstadt (1960–70), where he was a major figure. Free collective improvisation and electronics play an important part in his output, which includes wittily allusive incidental music for Arnold Wesker's play The Four Seasons (1968), as well as chamber, orchestral, and instrumental works in an attractively Epicurean stylistic mix.
